Set Frame-Editing Rules for Spreads and Frames

By default, frames are not editable by users in a Job. It is possible, however, to set rules on a frame-by-frame basis, or for all frames on a spread.

NOTE: A user may only edit a frame if the frame contains content that the user may edit (i.e. image, text segment). Frames that contain no editable content cannot be edited during a Job.

Set Frame Rules for individual frames

Click Frame Rules > Individual Frame Rules in a frame's option menu to open the Frame Rules – Individual dialog

The option menu for a frame can be accessed via:

  1. the Structure Panel.
  2. the top-right corner of the frame in the preview.

Any Frame Rules set in this dialog will apply to this frame only.

NOTE: The frame must contain content that has been added to a Content Group. If it does not, the frame cannot be edited during a Job.

Set Frame Rules for all frames on a Spread

Click Frame Rules > Individual Frame Rules  in a spread's option menu to open the Frame Rules – Individual dialog

The option menu for a spread can be accessed via:

  1. the Structure Panel.
  2. the top-right corner of the spread in the preview.

Any Frame Rules set in this dialog will apply to frames on this spread only.

NOTE: The frames on the spread must contain content that has been added to a Content Group. If they do not, those frames cannot be edited during a Job.

Choose Settings & Click 'Apply'

  1. Inherit settings: By default, frames will inherit Frame Rules from their document (or their spread). To override this and create individual rules for frame(s), you much uncheck this box.
  2. Add Rules: Set all rules for editing the frame(s) from the drop-down menu.
  3. Apply/Save: Click Apply or Save.

You can choose any combination of rules from the menu.

  • Allow All: This option permits users full control over the position and geometry of frames containing editable content in their Job. Choose this will add 5 separate rules to the list: resize, move, scale, rotate, and skew.
  • Allow Resize: Users can resize frames freely.
  • Allow Resize: Left: Users can use the resize handle on the left side of frames only.
  • Allow Resize: Right: Users can use the resize handle on the right side of frames only.
  • Allow Resize: Top: Users can use the resize handle on the top of frames only.
  • Allow Resize: Bottom: Users can use the resize handle on the bottom of frames only.
  • Allow Move: Users can move frames freely around the spread.
  • Allow Move: Horizontal: Users can move frames horizontally only.
  • Allow Move: Vertical: Users can move frames vertically only.
  • Allow Scale: Users can scale frames freely.
  • Allow Scale: Horizontal: Users can scale frames horizontally only.
  • Allow Scale: Vertical:  Users can scale frames vertically only.
  • Allow Rotate: Users can rotate frames freely.
  • Allow Rotate: To: Users can rotate frames to a given angle only.
  • Allow Skew: Users can skew frames freely.

NOTE: For example, choosing Allow Resize allows users to resize all frames containing editable content. However, choosing a combination of Allow Resize: Right and Allow Resize: Bottom then users can resize all frames containing editable content, but only using the right, bottom-right, and bottom handles of the frame. In other words, the top and left edges of the frames will stay in their original positions.

NOTE: Choosing Allow All from the list will add 5 separate rules: Resize, Move, Scale, Rotate, and Skew.

NOTE: If Inherit Settings is unchecked and no rules are chosen from the list, then this frame will not be editable in this project.
