Images are typically linked to an Adobe® InDesign® document rather than being embedded. Therefore, in order for Adobe® InDesign® Server to render the images in the document, the images must be uploaded to the one2edit™ system.
This lesson shows what happens if images are missing.
NOTE: When a project is created, one2edit™ will attempt to link the document's images from a subfolder named Links (case-sensitive name). This is because an Adobe® InDesign® package places all document images into a subfolder named Links. If that subfolder does not exist, or if the images are not in there, then the images will be missing. Please take care to ensure that your folder structure adheres to the Adobe® standard.
What happens when Links are missing?
A binary Adobe InDesign file (i.e. an INDD file) contains embedded proxy images, which are low-resolution versions of the document's images.
- If an image is missing (i.e. InDesign Server cannot locate the image), then the low-res proxy image will be used instead. While this might not be obvious to the naked eye while zoomed out in one2edit™, zooming in will cause pixelation to be more pronounced. More importantly, your PDF export cannot contain high-res images if they are missing.
- When the link is available, the high-res image will be displayed.
NOTE: You can set a project to always display the low-res proxy images via the Default Preview Quality setting in the Project Details dialog. This may be done for performance reasons, because the low-res proxy images have a lower rendering time. Therefore, if you see low-res images in the editor, but the images are not missing, this may be the reason why. Any exports will still use the high-res images.
NOTE: The IDML file format (i.e. not an INDD file) is a text-only file, and contains no low-res proxy images. If you use an IDML file to create a one2edit™ project, any missing links will show up as gray frames.
Check for missing Links
Open the Project Details dialog by clicking Properties in the document's context menu, or by clicking the thumbnail to the left of the document.
- Select the Links tab.
- If any links have a broken-link icon beside them, then InDesign Server is unable to find those links.
- Links are checked when a project is created. The Validate button re-checks all links at their original path, but cannot relink missing links. Missing links must be relinked manually in the source-language document via the Document Info panel.
NOTE: If you uploaded your links after creating the one2edit™ project, then you will need to manually relink your images. Please see the article in this Knowledge Base entitled: How can I relink missing Links?
NOTE: Outdated Links
Links may also be marked with a warning triangle if they are outdated (i.e. when the image is changed after it was linked to the document).
An outdated image is not missing, but it does still require a user to check that the changes made to the image file have not caused issues within the InDesign document (e.g. the cropping is still correct, the color profile has not changed, etc.).
Outdated links are resolved:
- via the Document Info panel in the editor (simply click the warning triangle).
- automatically when a document is opened, if you have enabled the setting: Settings > Client Workspace Settings > Auto-update outdated images
